The Secret Life of Plastic
(The Astwood Room)

Despite a miserable wet day on Saturday, a few of our artists turned up to clean Jobson’s Cove.

To:  Michael Cacy, Vernon Clarke, Christopher Grimes,  Marlene Jantzen, Christopher Marson, Margaret Potts and Mary Tatem.   Thank you for your support !  And thank you to Vanese Gordon from the Ministry of Works and Engineering (waste management division) for pointing out some scary facts to us !

The plastic collected will be put together to form.... Well, we’re not sure what is going to formed, but you can be sure that it’s going to be interesting.

The Secret Life of Plastic is open to all members.  So if you feel like helping the environment and having some fun with someone else’s trash –
please get out there and bring in your trashy sculpture or collage by March 3.
==========================

Just a reminder, the deadline to send in suggestions for amendment to the BACD rules is February 28.  We welcome all input.    Please send all submissions to bacdmanagement@logic.bm.

As previously announced, there will be a Special General Meeting at BACD in May for the specific purpose of finalising and gaining approval of the new rules.  The date will be forthcoming.

As always, thank you for your continued support.  Without you – there is no us.

February 1 2011

Greetings from Dockyard.   What a gorgeous day !!

Have you walked along our beaches lately and noticed all the trash?
Although a lot of us are to blame for littering, most of the trash – predominately the plastic is washed to our shores.

We are hoping that you might help us make a difference.
Next Saturday, February 12th we are asking for your support in meeting us at Jobson’s Cove to clear the trash.  It has been sitting there since Fabian.

Now here’s the catch......
Instead of putting the trash into bags to be collected and burned, we are asking that the trash be taken home and a sculpture be made.  For any of you that aren’t artists, please come along and donate your ‘trash’ to an artist.

The Astwood Room will be featuring the “Trash Show” of sculptures made from the clean up, on Sunday March 6, along with the ‘Second Annual Art of Craft.’

In addition, the Department of Environment and Health are requesting that all the “Trashy Sculptures” be displayed at their tent in this year’s Annual Exhibition.  Hopefully the sculptures will be eye catching enough to bring public awareness as to how badly the ocean is polluted.

The actual cleaning of Jobson's Cove is not just that:   We have documentation forms from the Department of the Environment that will be filled out - a  before and after if you
will.    It is a survey as to how much plastic is being washed to our  shores.  Our documentation will be filed with the Department, and this will go into a world wide survey.

Plastic is the worse garbage that we have in our oceans, and there’s a whole load of it. We are encouraging you therefore to use as much of it in your sculpture as possible.
Let’s do our small part to keep Bermuda beautiful and also do our small part towards the earth’s environment.

To sign up for the trash clean up, please e mail or telephone us.

All Trashy Sculptures must be in by Thursday, March 3.

We await your response !
