Robert D Bassett
Born on the beautiful island of Bermuda on 9th December 1951, Robert's art has been called a smile, a song, a celebration of the gift of life.
Bassett, whose work has been strongly influenced by the Bermuda Gombey troupes, and Bermuda kite making, paints in a buoyantly dramatic, big, bold and beguiling style. He has also been influenced by the modern impressionist masters and contemporary African figurativism. However, he uses the masters' techniques in such a way as to enhance his alluring painting style.
Roberts popularity continues to take dramatic leaps. During May of a 1995 his work was exhibited in a full "one Man Show" at Howard University, entitled "Language of the Hue". The show was well received in the Washington D.C. and Maryland area and as a consequence was held over for two additional months.
He has also exhibited at the Museum of African Art in Los Angeles, California, at the prestigious Montuck Club, New York the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta and at the Agora gallery in SOHO on Broadway in New York.
Robert's work has also been featured in the popular Upscale magazine and in the international travel magazine, "Islands", along with thirty five other artists from around the world. He was also invited to participate in the New York Art Expo during March of 1996. The New York Art Expo is the largest of it's kind in the world.
Robert's creations can now be found in the private collections of Ms. Susan L. Taylor, Editor-in-chief of Essence magazine, Mr. Bernard Bronner, Owner and CEO of Upscale magazine, Mr. Les Browne, noted motivational speaker and talk show host, Dr. Ben Carson, world renown Neurosurgeon, the honorable, Sir Lyndon Pindling, former Prime-minister of the Bahamas and Mrs. Coretta Scott-King, widow of the late Martin Luther King.
Robert Bassett's art transcends racial barriers. He says "I see myself as a universal painter. My work transcends all cultural boundaries. I want to do all that I can to contribute to the healing of a child, the adult, the nation, the world. Because love is the key."
He believes that respect for the creator and his creation will give us respect for ourselves and our own creativity. "After all," he says, "the greatest artist of all is God, Himself"
